Black Card

The history of Louis XIII began in 1874, when Paul Emile Rémy Martin blended very old eaux-de-vie in a single decanter, the exact replica of a metal flask adorned with fleurs-de-lys, lost in the 16th century on the battlefield of Jarnac and found 150 years later.

This elixir is the result of a blend of 1,200 eaux-de-vie, aged from 40 to over 100 years old, all produced from the soil of Grande Champagne in the most precious plots of vines of the Cognac region. Four generations of Cellar Masters have succeeded each other at the stills, each one preserving the taste and giving his own interpretation of this remarkeable recipe.

A Modern and Contemporary Interpretation

Christophe Pillet has created his own interpretation of this legendary cognac, designing each of his creations by linking them to his experience of Louis XIII, with special attention devoted to the way they relate to the light. His design is based on highly elaborated worked features and on the use of noble materials, such as crystal and polished and brushed stainless steel - symbols of the excellence and craftmanship in the service of luxury.

It is Christophe Pillet’s global approach to his work that characterises this “young” designer. He tackles each project with the aim of finding the right forms that correspond to the story that he wants to tell.
“I design an object or an environment because I have the feeling, at a given moment, that I have a point of view on a situation and that this feeling is strong enough to produce a pertinent result”, says Pillet.
When he approached Louis XIII, Pillet was seeking to translate the values of luxury and expertise, tradition and modernity conveyed by this unrivalled Cognac. Hence why his choice of materials and his use of light enable him, far more efficiently than his contemporaries, to give his objects the refinement and elegance of French-style luxury but with a 2st Century twist.
